The Solemnity of All Saints. A time to celebrate our intercessors. Remember to thank God for all the saints, named and unnamed. Also the Octave of All Saints begins, pray for the souls in Purgatory.

Muñequitos Monasticos: Bridgettines

The Order of the Most Holy Savior is an order of nuns and monks founded by St. Bridget of Sweden in 1346. From my cursory research on the order they appear to be Augustinians, but also have the St. Bridget's rule. I'm not sure how that works. My comments box is open to an explanation of this.
The nuns of the order are known for the crown they wear over their veil.

Saint Kateri was not an eco-warrior, a bridge between native and Catholic spirituality or a political pawn. She was a witness to Our Lord, a keeper of the Faith, a daughter of the Church, a Catholic Saint through and through.

This is for the 8 French Jesuits who found their martyrdom in 17th century North America. They braved the wild frontier and hostility to spread the Faith. For all the guff the Jesuits get nowadays (much of it deserved, unfair for the solid Jesuits) they were heroic Christian witnesses as demonstrated by Saints Issac Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Noël Chabanel, Antoine Daniel, Charles Garnier, Jean de Lalande and René Goupil.

Trivia: Soon to be Saint Kateri Takakwitha was born in the village St. Isaac Jogues was martyred.

One of the Evangelist. Was converted by Paul and accompanied him. He wrote the Gospel According to Luke and Acts of the Apostles. He was a practicing physician and legend has it that he was an artist, so me being an artist took that route in the illustration for this post.

He is a patron for Artist, brewers, physicians, gold smiths and notaries

St. Teresa of Ávila or St. Teresa of Jesus. This Spanish saint is one of the heavyweights. She received visions and was a mystical writer. Founded the Discalced Carmelite reform and was declared a Doctor of the Church. This great saint has many quotables, like the bookmark of St. Teresa:

Let nothing disturb you; Let nothing frighten you. All things are passing. God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Nothing is wanting to him who possesses God. God alone suffices.

She is a patron of Spain, loss of parents, those ridiculed for their piety, against sickness, and those in need of grace.

Norbertine Beer... Sort Of

Last time I talked about a couple of "secular" beers (Huh? Secular beers? What I mean are beers not brewed by religious), one having origins with a religious order and the other named after an order. Another secular beer that used to be brewed by religious is Leffe ale. Brewed in Belgium and known as an abbey beer (Abbey beers are beers not brewed by Trappists, beers brewed under an arrangement with a monastery or beers that use the monastic angle in their branding).

 Leffe has it's roots with the Canons Regular of Prémontré. The abbey was founded in 1152, went through all kinds of calamities like a flood, a fire, plague, marauders, and the French Revolution which saw the end of the brewing until the Abbey was able to brew again in 1952. They don't brew the beer anymore, a commercial enterprise does, but royalties go to the abbey.

Franzikaner Weissbier

I came across this animation on the Franziskaner website. It is an official trademark of Franziskaner Wiessbier(wheat beer). I find it mesmerizing.

The brewery dates back to the 14th century. It wasn't brewed by Franciscans though, the brewery just happened to be across the street from a friary.

There is another weissbier maker in Munich that uses a friar as their trademark, Paulaner. They are younger than Franziskaner, and actually do have origins with a religious order, the Order of Minims, but they don't have a mezmorizing animated graphic.

Sankt Bruno von Köln

St. Bruno of Cologne (I've always wondered why we translate  Köln to Cologne). Born in Köln, became a priest, professor of theology in Rheims (Pope Urban II was one of his students), founded the Carthusian Order (one of the most austere monastic orders, said to nunquam reformata quia nunquam deformata, which translates to never needed reform because the were never deformed. Rhymes in English and Latin),  and was counselor to Pope Urban II (who was one of his students in Rheims). He is a patron of diabolically possessed people. Today his feast falls on both calenders of the Roman rite.

Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face appeared on the battlefields and at the trenches of WWI. Artillery, planes and regiments where named after her. I'm sure the whiny atheist of today that like to complain about crosses in the middle of the desert would find that fine and dandy.
